Having just realized that I can title each individual post, I was inspired to write about new events and opportunities that are prompted by the life of an Air Force brat. While not all of these tidbits will be as important and amazing as the title of posts, they are fairly important to my life and making me the woman --ish-- I am today.
Probably one of the most impressing ordeals would be the moves. I have always been a pretty shy girl and it takes me quite a while to warm up to new people. So, moving to a new school and neighborhood was a little stressful. You never know what to expect; and unfortunately, I have learned the hard way that first impressions are not always correct. I was so afraid of the judgment that new students faced the first day they walked into the classroom. I know how that was for there were many times when I was the one doing the judging. You can't help it when someone new comes to school. Are they weird? Are they cool? Would I want to be seen talking to this person? There was always the chance that one could be popular at one school and move to another and be stuck with the outcasts.
It was not always the worst to be the one doing the moving away. I have seen many a friend make the move out of my life. It can be strange to be in the same environment with some of the same friends, and realizing that things would not be the same. The worst is when everyone realizes that the one that moved away was the one that held the group together.
For fear of sounding ungrateful --and slightly neurotic-- I will iterate that I am thankful for the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. You can learn a lot about yourself by being placed in new situations. I welcome new experiences, I love to learn new things and am fortunate to have had many great friends in my life, even if they did come and go.

Though, my girlfriend was not an Army brat, she moved around quite often when she was younger. She stayed in a city for about two years before her family moved again. Her father simply liked to move around a lot.
ReplyDeleteShe always talks about how she made new friends and then had to leave them and find new ones in another city. Your post reminded me of her experiences.
I'm sure that must be exciting and difficult at the same time.
Personally, I think that moving itself gets easier, but making/keeping friends gets harder.
ReplyDeleteMy best friend since kindergarten moved to San Antonio when we were in 4th grade, then to Ocean Springs MS when we were in 7th. We see each other every year still,so I was thinking maybe yo've had some friends you've been able to stay in touch with despite all the moving?
ReplyDeleteHe was an "airforce brat" as well.
ReplyDeleteI moved around alot when I was younger and I completely understand how it feels to be the new kid, and trying to establish yourself.
ReplyDelete"...the one that moved away was the one that held the group together"
ReplyDeleteVery insightful and very true. It's sad, but it happens, even if it takes a lot of time and effort to realize.
